Ashes Test: The current Ashes 2023 series got off to a fantastic start with Pat Cummins-led Australia defeating England at home in a thriller. As the game came down to the wire, it was up to skipper Cummins to chase down the target and lead the Aussies to a spectacular triumph at Edgbaston.
One of the game’s pivotal moments came when England captain Ben Stokes fumbled a catch that may have dismissed Nathan Lyon. Lyon was undefeated for 16 runs with Cummins, and his knock was crucial for Australia in chasing down the goal.
Reflecting on the squandered chance, Stokes compared it to Lyon missing the run-out in 2019, when the English captain guided his team to a stunning triumph in Headingley.
“It’s incredible. It’s beginning to resemble Headingley, with Gaz (Lyon) dumping the ball over the stumps. Isn’t it wonderful how the universe revolves around us? You know, I drop the catch, and then he’s not out in the end, being there as the winning team–being there as an Australia not-out batsman. It’s crazy how things go around like that,” Stokes remarked after the game.
“God, I’m reliving it in my head right now. I had the ball in my hand, but I couldn’t get it to stick. It was one of those could’ve, would’ve, should’ve scenarios. But it would have been a good catch, wouldn’t it?” Stokes elaborated.
Pat Cummins’ tenacious all-round effort propelled Australia to a remarkable victory.
On Day 5, Australia needed 174 runs to win after setting a goal of 281 runs. Because Scott Boland and Usman Khawaja are on strike. England struck early in the day, when Boland was sent packing. However, it was Khawaja who shone for the Aussies once more. Following a superb tonne in the first innings, the 36-year-old produced an undefeated spectacular 55-run partnership with Lyon in the second innings to help Australia cross the finish line.
As England took wickets at regular intervals, it was Australia’s captain Pat Cummins’ innings that drove them to victory. Cummins made 44* runs in 73 balls in a stunning partnership with Nathan Lyon to win the opening Test of the Ashes 2023.
