T20 Blast 2023: Birmingham Bears skipper Alex Davies had to go back to the pavilion against Essex in the first Quarter Final of the current T20 Blast 2023. The third umpire ruled that the opener was caught behind despite no indication of ball contact on UltraEdge. The decision was received with boos from the home fans at Edgbaston.
Birmingham Bears lost opener Rob Yates for a three-ball duck after a remarkable wicket maiden by Daniel Sams in the quarterfinal match. Despite the early impact, Glenn Maxwell joined Captain Alex Davies in the middle of the ship to try to stabilise the ship.
Their fast stand, though, came to a halt in the fourth over when Aaron Beard was given the ball. After a vociferous demand for a caught behind on the fourth ball of Beard’s over, the on-field umpires were unimpressed. Essex appealed the onfield call, but the fans cheered in anticipation when the UltraEdge showed no spike.
After a last-over drama, the Bears are out.
However, third umpire Nigel Llong decided in favour of the bowling side because the ball passed through the batter’s glove with a tiny deviation. After the difficult decision, the Bears’ captain walked a long distance back to the pavilion. After the first innings, Sam Hain’s half-century, together with late flurry from Chris Benjamin and Dominic Drakes, propelled the home side to a competitive score.
Essex got off to a flying start in their reply, with Adam Rossington and Dan Lawrence putting on a fantastic first-wicket partnership. Alex Davies, on the other hand, redeemed himself to some measure by dispatching Rossington with a stunning run-out that sent the home fans into a frenzy. But it took a dramatic final over for the visitors to cross the line. Lawrence, with his consistent half-century, was Essex’s star.
