T20 World Cup 2022: Mohammed Siraj’s recent success in the ODI series against South Africa, in the opinion of former Indian opening batsman Aakash Chopra, does not qualify him for the T20 World Cup in 2022. Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement for the major event has not yet been chosen by the Men in Blue, and there are a number of candidates standing by.
The right-arm pacer from Hyderabad has enjoyed a historic year in ODI cricket, but his statistics in the shorter format are perhaps caused for concern. He had a terrible Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season, taking just nine wickets with a 10.08 economy rate.
A similar trajectory can be seen in Siraj’s T20I career. Since making his debut in 2017, he has only appeared in six games and has already taken five wickets at a 10.54 economy rate.
Chopra noted on his YouTube channel that Siraj would find it challenging to bowl with a wet ball in Australian conditions.
“Is Siraj prepared for the World Cup based on his performance? I won’t juggle formats. Siraj’s IPL performance was poor; he doesn’t have a lot of control in T20 cricket.”
“Siraj has consistently performed well when India has fielded first. He bowls effectively with a dry ball and occasionally gets the ball to reverse, but he won’t have the same circumstances in Australia for the World Cup.”
The right-arm pacer does have happy recollections of bowling in Australia, but those accomplishments involved the red ball. Siraj made his ODI debut in Adelaide in 2019 and finished with a score of 0-76, which is noteworthy.
Aakash Chopra: “I still think that either Shami or Chahar should be on the World Cup roster.”
The prospective replacements for Bumrah in the squad each have advantages and disadvantages to consider.
While adding experience and leadership to the team, Mohammed Shami last participated in a T20I match in 2021 and is now recovering from a COVID-19 illness.
While Deepak Chahar, who has participated in a few white-ball matches, is battling a back problem.
The ICC can no longer interfere with Team India’s announcement of their replacement as of October 15.
