Afghanistan T20I Series: Mohammad Yousuf, the temporary batting coach for the Pakistan men’s side, has decided not to travel to Sharjah for the next T20I series against Afghanistan due to personal obligations. Due to his withdrawal, Abdur Rehman, the interim head coach, has now assumed the position of batting coach. Only hours before the team’s Wednesday afternoon departure for the UAE, Yousuf cancelled his participation in the series. Notably, the T20I series of three games are set to start on March 24, Friday.
On March 13, Yousuf, a former Pakistani captain, was appointed as interim head coach. Najam Sethi, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), tweeted a revised list of the Pakistan team’s support personnel in the meantime. Yousuf was mistakenly identified as the coach, and the cricket organisation later clarified that he will continue in his role as the batting coach.
“I realise that since it’s a temporary position, the coaching staff was named after the team. This question could have been more pertinent if there had been a permanent staff, but since I have been given an interim position, my only responsibility is to attempt to win the series,” added Rehman.
Rehman responded that he has been doing this job for so long and that working with them will increase his confidence when questioned about leading a team with several veteran instructors.
“I’ve been performing this work for 15 years. It’s not like I’ll be giving them orders. In fact, having them at my side makes me feel more assured. Working with them is a privilege; I must cooperate with them and benefit from their knowledge,” he remarked.
Pakistan’s T20I captain is named Shadab Khan.
The Haroon Rasheed-led selections committee selected the Pakistani team for the T20I series against Afghanistan. Imad Wasim and Faheem Ashraf have been brought back to the team, and Shadab Khan has been made captain. Saim Ayub and Ihsanullah, who put on standout performances in the recently finished Pakistan Super League (PSL), have got their first calls to duty. Significantly, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Rizwan, and Babar Azam have all received rest.
