The Ashes: Australia’s star batter Steve Smith said that winning a series on Indian soil would be “greater” than winning the Ashes before the eagerly awaited Test series against team India. A four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series between the two ferocious rivals is set to begin on Thursday, February 9.
The Ashes, the longest-running rivalry in cricket between the two arch-rivals of Australia and England, is one of the most eagerly awaited contests in the sport. Smith did, however, acknowledge the difficulty of playing in India and winning when compared to the Ashes.
“It’s challenging to win a Test match there, let alone a series. The would-be a big accomplishment if we could move that mountain. I believe that a victory in India would be more significant than an Ashes series,” Smith said in an interview with cricket.com.au.
Smith is now exuding confidence following a fantastic Big Bash League season for the Sydney Sixers that just ended (BBL). In just five innings, he amassed 346 runs at an average of 86.50, including one half-century and two centuries.
I’m eager to test myself against the top spinners: Richard Warner
David Warner, a flashy southpaw, is also in good form, as evidenced by his recent stunning double-century (200 runs) in Australia’s convincing Test victory over South Africa in December. Warner is likewise in fantastic form, similar to Smith. Given that the team hasn’t won a series on Indian soil since the 2004–05 season, the match versus India will be a tough challenge.
Australia will attempt to overcome the obstacle while considering India’s spin-friendly tracks. Warner expressed his enthusiasm for the tour and desire to compete against the top spinners during the same exchange. “It’s usually a lot of work, but I’m looking forward to the tour. Applying myself against the world’s top spinners is one thing I’m looking forward to,” Warner stated.
