Australian Media: Steve Smith, the stand-in captain, criticised the Australian press for their perspective on the team selection prior to the fourth and final red-ball match of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. His remarks followed recommendations from various news organisations and a few former Australian cricketers that the team should play to its advantage in order to deal with the Indian pitch conditions.
In response to criticism of the team selection, Smith described it as “strange” prior to the fourth Test. Also, he underlined the effect spinners had on the playing field in earlier games. The spinners controlled the ball display in the three final games. In the games, Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin all managed to perform admirably.
“Some of the reaction back home has been strange, with people mentioning that we played three quicks and one spinner. When I look at these fields and consider how many innings we’ve played—11 in six days, perhaps—it kind of blows my mind. The majority of wickets have been taken by spinners, demonstrating how challenging it is to play spin,” Smith said at a press conference before the last Test.
We have confidence in the work we’re doing: Steve Smith
The prominent Australian cricketer also said that the management is aware of how to play in the circumstances. Smith takes delight in getting the outcomes with three spinners despite much conjecture from the Australian media that the team should play three pacers and one spinner.
“We have confidence in what we’re doing, and it’s nice that we can demonstrate that we can play with three spinners and succeed,” Smith continued.
In the four-match series, India now holds a 2-1 advantage and has won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Australian team, led by Smith, enjoyed a magnificent performance in the third Test in Indore, securing their spot in the ICC World Test Championship finals for the years 2021–2023.
When Rohit Sharma and company take on Australia on March 9 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, they must win the last Test to secure their spot in the red-ball competition’s grand finale.
