WTC Final: Australia supported David Warner for the World Test Championship match against India in spite of his bat issues in the longest version of the game. The southpaw ultimately came through and helped his team get off to a good start, scoring 43 runs off of 60 balls and, more crucially, tackling Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj skillfully during a challenging period.
It’s interesting to see that Warner altered his strategy for Test cricket. In order to prevent himself from entering the crease too far, he dug a large hole near to the wickets. In order to evaluate his moves, he also drew a deep line parallel to the stumps behind the crease. Senior Australian batsman Steve Smith made the amusing claim that he nearly twisted his ankle during the first few deliveries when discussing the identical situation. He continued by saying that while it took him some time to realise, he finally developed a habit of doing it.
“Yeah, I nearly slipped in that. I avoided moving around it, somewhat of. I soon got used to it, but to be honest, the first few balls I encountered outside nearly caused me to twist my ankle. I eventually used to it, but it was strange.” According to Smith, who was reported by India Today, “I’d actually never encountered that before on that side.”
The 34-year-old continued, “You know, you sometimes get the edge of the footmarks, the back end of a game, second innings where you kind of fall into them and you’re kind of, yeah, I don’t know, just off balance, but when I’m moving to off stump and I’ve got this hole there, it was something I hadn’t experienced before, but maybe I need to do it more often, it worked for me, so he can keep digging that hole I suppose.”
Meanwhile, Australia scored 469 runs in the first innings because to Smith and Travis Head’s outstanding 285-run partnership on day 1. The Rohit Sharma-led team is 151/5 after Day 2 despite the Indian hitters’ struggles to get going. They are now 318 runs behind.
