Ashes 2023: Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg believes David Warner may be unable to deploy his distinctive guard during the next Ashes series, which begins on Friday, June 16. Notably, the two arch-rivals will square off in Birmingham for the first Test at Edgbaston.
Former cricketer Hogg spoke up about Warner’s guard and why he would not be allowed to utilise it during the Ashes before of the first red-ball match. For the uninitiated, the powerful Australian Southpaw developed a new strategy that allowed him to go back and cover the ball line in the recently ended ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final. According to Hogg, the distinctive guard would disrupt the other hitters and the pitch cannot be harmed in accordance with ICC Rule 41.14.2.
“To help with his trigger movement, David Warner digs two holes behind the crease. He wishes to return and cross to cover the off-stump. However, this guard makes other batters feel uneasy as well. This is due to statute 41.14.2, which specifies that you cannot damage the pitch,” Hogg said on his YouTube channel.
Edgbaston appears to be a dry wicket: Hogg
Furthermore, Brad Hogg discussed England’s aggressive batting technique, dubbed ‘Bazball,’ and stated that the host team prefers to chase after winning the toss. However, given that the Edgbaston field seems to be dry, the Australian veteran spinner Nathan Lyon might play a key part in the critical contest’s later stages.
“When England wins the toss in English conditions, they like to field first under (Brendon) McCullum and (Ben) Stokes. They like chasing with their aggressive batting approach. However, Edgbaston appears to be a dry wicket. The wicket may disintegrate fast due to the heat temperatures during the first two of days. Nathan Lyon will enter the competition on Days 4 and 5,” he continued.
Under McCullum’s leadership, the Stokes-led England have won 11 of their 13 matches and will be vying for the Ashes in 2023. Australia, on the other side, will be looking to offset the aggressive attitude and recapture the World Test Championship 2021-23 trophy in England.
