Spartan Sports: David Warner, Australia’s star opener, has received good news off the pitch ahead of the second Test in the Ashes 2023, which begins on Wednesday, June 28 at Lord’s. After a court struggle with one of his previous sponsors, Spartan Sports, the great batter was paid almost $420,000.
According to sources, the Australian opening sued Spartan Sports, a firm located on the Northern Beaches, for unpaid sponsorship money. Warner was granted $422,727 in his action last week in the Sydney District Court.
According to the Daily Mail, the Judge, Matthew Dicker SC, ordered the two firms that ran Spartan Sports, Spartan Sport Corporation and SS Management (Australia), to pay Warner $382,940 as the basic sum requested by him.
A total of $39,786 in interest was also paid since Warner’s initial lawsuit against the corporation last year. Spartan initially inked a multi-year contract with Warner in 2018. Before him, the firm signed iconic Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, former India captain MS Dhoni, and former Australia captain Michael Clarke.
“Spartan has yet to pay us. We agreed with David to take them to court. If they don’t pay the money, the next stage is putting Spartan under,” Warner’s manager James Erskine was reported as saying by News Corp.
Separately, the Australian hitter is suing Ben Carberry, who functioned as Spartan Sports’ agent in the discussions. Carberry has yet to file a defence and did not appear in court last week. Following problems with Spartans, the 36-year-old moved to DSC bats in 2021.
Former India great Sachin Tendulkar has already sued Spartan Sports.
David Warner is not the first player to sue Spartan Sports; three years ago, India star Sachin Tendulkar sued the firm for failing to pay him royalties for the use of his image and brand in promotional activities. Following that, the former cricketer struck a settlement and was paid $3.1 million.
Meanwhile, Warner, who scored 9 and 36 in the first innings at Edgbaston, will be eager to play in the second Ashes Test and show himself in English conditions.
