Cricket Live: Following Australia’s tight defeat in the third Ashes Test at Headingley, former captain Michael Clarke has urged drastic changes to the batting order for the next match. The ex-cricketer fought hard against a struggling David Warner, who was defeated by Stuart Broad for the 17th time in the previous Test.
Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has proposed a solution to David Warner’s continuing spat with Stuart Broad. While the Australian squad had a ready-made replacement in Matt Renshaw, Michael Clarke prefers someone from the starting eleven to fill the opening position.
Clarke even offered another struggling Australian batter, Marnus Labuschagne, for the opening spot. While Mitchell Marsh scored a century in his Test debut, his spot in the team is not secured, with a healthy Cameron Green slated to start in the Manchester Test.
“Tell me what they’re doing now… The main issue is that you’ve stuck with Warner, given him every chance, and (Stuart) Broad still has his number. Is it finally time? If the moment comes, I wouldn’t even consider who opens the batting since you have alternatives.
“Mitch Marsh seemed to be in top form. He could do it if he really had to. Alex Carey is unlikely to do so since he has to maintain it, but Travis Head could. At No.3, Marnus Labuschagne isn’t making as many runs as he should. He could open, Smithy could go to No. 3 and Head could go to No. 4 (with Marsh and Green at Nos. 5 and 6),” Michael Clarke remarked on Sky Sports Cricket.
They should stick with Warner or change the batting order and keep Mitch Marsh: Warner
In response to the argument about Cameron Green’s comeback, Clarke believes the gifted all-rounder should be reinstated only if he is fit enough to bowl his quota of overs. With Green’s return, Marsh might move up the batting order, replacing Warner at the top.
“The first thing you need to consider is whether David Warner’s time is up.” And, if you’re going to bring Cameron Green back in, is he fully fit to bowl the overs he has to bowl? I believe they should stick with Warner or change the batting order and keep Mitch Marsh,” Clarke remarked.
