WTC Loss: After an upsetting defeat to Australia in the World Test Championship finals, Rohit Sharma’s status as the leader in the longest format of the game has come under scrutiny. However, selectors and team management have shown enough trust in the 36-year-old to keep him as Test captain for the two-match series against the West Indies.
Meanwhile, following the news, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar voiced his dismay, stating that the BCCI selectors should have spoken with Rohit about his future in the longest format. Gavaskar stated that Rohit should have accepted some responsibility, but that was not the case as the team lost by 209 runs.
“I’d like to know if there is no accountability. Did you hold a meeting after the WTC final to discuss the choice of a captain? There used to be a selection meeting when the captain was appointed, and then he was requested to join the selection meeting two days later. The captain had no voting rights; he was a co-opted member who could ask for a bowler, spinner, or extra batter,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.
‘A captain once nominated is not replaced, regardless of whether they continue to lose series after series,’ Sunil Gavaskar said of India’s system.
Gavaskar went on to say that even when an Indian captain fails to perform, he is never sacked or replaced, which has to change. He gave examples from his time and stated that this was not the situation in the 1980s or 1990s.
“However, this hasn’t happened in our cricket for the past 10-12 years. A captain’s appointment is permanent, regardless of how many series they lose. “Captaincy will be retained as long as individual performance is good,” he stated.
“If there was a strong selector, he would have asked why Ashwin was not selected, why they chose to field first, and why there was a delay in using the short ball tactic against Travis Head.” These inquiries are required. Even after that, you may maintain them as captain, but accountability must be in place,” Gavaskar remarked.
