While recently locker room gossip tipped Zinedine Zidane to leave, a fight with Zidane got Marcelo benched at Real Madrid.
Real Madrid defender Marcelo had a heated argument with manager Zinedine Zidane, Goal can confirm.
The Brazilian has grown increasingly frustrated with his manager after falling down the Real pecking, playing back-up to Ferland Mendy.
The veteran left-back has been bypassed by Mendy on the team’s depth chart. Indeed, Marcelo is at 15th place in Madrid’s squad when it comes to total minutes this term.
Now, with Mendy out for the remainder of the season, Marcelo had hopes of starting in Thursday’s match against Granada.
But he was left off the squad list for the crucial match at the Nuevo Estadio de Los Carmenes.
Zidane, after the fight, dropped the Brazilian, who turned 33 on Wednesday, entirely from their matchday squad on Wednesday.
Instead, the head coach may be letting academy product Miguel Gutierrez, who’s only played senior football as a substitute, start.
Marcelo’s argument with Zidane involved him confronting the manager of his line-up decisions this season.
So, a fight with Zidane got Marcelo benched at Real Madrid. But he is the only veteran to have voiced his frustration with Zidane, while others bear it more silently.
Not only have several other established players understood to have grown tired of the Frenchman’s methods, but many are in the Real locker room predicting the Frenchman to resign at the end of this season.
