UEFA have named Jorginho as their Men’s Player of the Year for the 2020-21 season. Among related breaking football news, Jorginho becomes the Player of the Year, after his Champions League and Euro 2020 titles.
Jorginho won the Champions League with Chelsea last season, and in the summer immediately after, won Euro 2020 with Italy.
The 29-year-old thus assisted Chelsea to the UCL victory in May, and six weeks later, Jorginho’s Italy won Euro 2020.
He started every game for Italy and missed only one match for the Blues during their run to continental glory.
By playing a stellar year for both club and country, Jorginho has become the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year.
He is also only the tenth player across football history to win both competitions in the same year.
Breaking Football News – Jorginho Becomes the Player of the Year
Chelsea and Italy’s Jorginho, a former Napoli midfielder, won the Player of the Year award over his own Chelsea teammate.
He bested superhero midfielder N’Golo Kante and Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne to the award on Thursday in Istanbul.
It’s the first time in the award’s 11-year history that the top three nominees for this award are all midfielders.
The three-man shortlist was notable for the absence of Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski, Kylian Mbappe, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Erling Haaland.
Indeed, only last year, Lewandowski won the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award.
The award is based on performances at the club and international levels over the course of a season.
