Champions League Football News – Chelsea Win over Malmo Marginally
It was a difficult first half of attack and defense for the visitors, who only had one clear-cut chance.
Just before the half-hour mark, Ruben Loftus-Cheek let Kai Havertz slip through. But the false nine delayed his shot, allowing a defender to apply pressure, and the goalkeeper blocked his mistimed effort.
After Hakim Ziyech and Loftus-Cheek both saw half-chances, Johan Dahlin saved Andreas Christensen’s long-range drive at the second attempt.
Then, Malmö almost delivered a hammer blow in first-half stoppage time. After smart work by Sergio Pea from a drop ball, Antonio-Mirko Colak volleyed just wide of Edouard Mendy’s far post.
Loftus-Cheek created an opportunity for himself ten minutes after the break. He displayed excellent muscle and deft technique before firing a shot that Dahlin stopped, though.
Chelsea finally got the crucial goal two minutes later when Callum Hudson-Odoi combined with Havertz. He then raced free and lay the ball on a platter for Ziyech. The latter did not miss this time as he finished into the empty net.
After further superb work from Loftus-Cheek, Thiago Silva had a header pushed off the line. Also, Havertz missed another one-v-one late on, but one goal was enough for Chelsea to win away here.
