But it was the hosts who started the match strongest with Mbappe actually scoring twice in the first seven minutes.
First, the France international coolly side-footed home from close range. With this goal, he became the youngest player to score 30 Champions League goals, at 22 years and 352 days.
Mbappe then finished a brace last night with a stunning volley from an Angel Di Maria dink over the top.
Then, Messi netted his first goal of the game on the 38 minutes. Though Brugge goalkeeper Simon Mignolet previously blocked him, Messi successfully aimed a curling effort from the edge of the box.
At the start of the second half, Brugge threatened to score and their reward was a goal by Mats Rits. The Brugge man reduced the deficit on 68 minutes.
But Messi slotted in a fourth (and final) goal for PSG from the penalty spot 14 minutes from death time.
“We took this match seriously and we delivered a complete performance,” Mbappe said about their performance after the 4-1 victory. “We can still improve. The bottom line is that we need to manage our weak times better. We have weak times, which are maybe much too weak.”
