Kylian Mbappé has hurt relationships at Paris Saint-Germain. The statements of the 24-year-old attacker in an interview with France Football seem to go down the wrong way with some of his teammates.
Statements from Mbappé go down the wrong way with teammates
The French magazine France Football named Mbappé French Player of the Year. When receiving that award, the PSG superstar took the time for an extensive interview. Mbappé did not mince words in this.
It was, among other things, about the criticism of his game, which Mbappé sometimes hears. “Do people underestimate my achievements? Yes, but I don’t blame them. We have seen the people grow up here and have scored for PSG and the French national team for years. So it becomes normal for the people. I never complained about that. I myself used to underestimate what Messi, Ronaldo and other great players did,” said Mbappé.
The Frenchman was also not afraid to point the club at fault. “I think the fact that I play for Paris Saint-Germain doesn’t help either. Because it is a team full of division, a club full of division. So that continuously leads to a lot of speculation. That doesn’t bother me, because I know what I’m doing and how to deal with it,” Mbappé assured.
What PSG lacks?
What PSG lacks? “I don’t know, you have to ask the people who put together the selection and the rest of the club. Sometimes in football you run into a glass ceiling. These are questions for the people above the club,” Mbappé stressed.
In any case, it is not his fault, according to the striker. “I’ve scored over forty goals this season and thirteen for the national team. I was the best player and top scorer in Ligue 1 for the fifth season in a row. In the Champions League I unfortunately got injured for the first leg against Bayern, we were powerless in the return. In my eyes I was the most decisive player. I could have done better by my own standards, but I can’t do magic either,” he added.
Mbappé’s statements are quite a stir. Especially given his current situation and his difficult relationship with the club management. He would have reacted furiously when the attacker recently announced in a letter that he will not renew his contract until mid-2024. Mbappé would like to leave on a free transfer next year, but PSG absolutely does not want to cooperate. The club is clear: extend or leave.
Teammates not happy
According to French and English media, even Mbappé’s fellow players are now fed up. Sky Sports and RMC, among others, report that several players have contacted the owner. “An insult to the club,” they call Mbappé’s words about the division at PSG.
