Chelsea academy graduate Mason Mount failed to agree a new contract at Stamford Bridge and now continues his career at Manchester United. On the website of his new employer, the English international is looking forward to working with Erik ten Hag.
Mount explains choice for Manchester United
Mount (24) has signed a five-year contract with United, with an option for an additional season. According to English media, United has paid a transfer fee of 65 million euros (excluding bonuses) to Chelsea. Mount remained there until the summer of next year.
“It’s never easy to leave the club you grew up in,” says Mount. “But Manchester United offers me a great new challenge for the next phase of my career. Of course I have already played against this team and therefore know what a strong selection I end up in. I can’t wait to be part of this group’s drive to win big trophies.”
Mount is United’s first signing for next season. “Everyone has seen that the club has taken great steps forward under Ten Hag,” the midfielder compliments his new trainer. “After meeting the manager and talking about his plans, I couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming seasons. I am ready for the hard work that is expected here.’
Mount has already won the Champions League with Chelsea. Now he is going for the highest achievable with United. “I’m very ambitious,” the midfielder emphasizes. “I know how great it feels to win big trophies and what it takes to get there. I will do everything I can to experience that again at Manchester United.”
Extra pressure on the shoulders: Mount opts for iconic back number at United
Mason Mount, taken over from Chelsea, will play with number 7 at Manchester United. This immediately puts a lot of extra pressure on his shoulders.
7 is an iconic shirt number at United, worn in the past by the likes of Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo. In recent years, however, the carriers of the song have been less successful. Players like Ángel Di María, Memphis Depay, Alexis Sánchez and Edinson Cavani did not become such big stars at Old Trafford as their illustrious predecessors.
Ronaldo took back number 7 when he made his United return and since the Portuguese left for Saudi Arabia midway through last season, the number has been vacant. Mount has now chosen to play with this special number at United.
