Former Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit saw on Tuesday during the lost game with Arsenal that there is a lot of irritation in the group of players at The Blues. Fellow analyst Jamie Carragher can’t believe how far Chelsea have fallen this season.
Fierce criticism from analysts Petit and Carragher about ‘mess’ at Chelsea
Former world champion Petit, who also played for Arsenal for four years, was present at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening and looked surprised in the direction of the Chelsea bench, where the Frenchman was under contract between 2001 and 2004.
“I was quite close to Chelsea’s reserves and saw that there was some irritation and disagreement between the players. Especially in the second half,” Petit told Premier League Productions. “I was also shocked by the attitude of the players on the pitch: their body language… They showed no responsibility, no pride. They were not united and did not exude camaraderie.”
“Even if you put twenty managers for this group, it won’t change anything at the moment. Something has to change in the dressing room first and then the club management has to think about which manager should be in front of the group. Even the best manager in the world can’t get this to work now. There are just too many players. It’s a mess and I was embarrassed to see Chelsea play like this,” Petit said.
“This could get much worse for Chelsea”
Former Liverpool defender Carragher also looks with increasing amazement at how Chelsea is currently doing (twelfth in the Premier League). “It’s a mess at Chelsea,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “And this could get much worse for Chelsea, as sorry as I am for Lampard and the supporters. The free fall the club is now in is truly unprecedented.”
He continued, “This situation shows that it makes no sense to throw money around all the time. You have to ensure that a certain connection is created within the team. Todd Boehly’s plans and ideas don’t work that way. There are still top players on the field, but losing six in a row is unacceptable. Think of the successes of the last two decades: since Arsenal last won the title (in 2004), Chelsea have won 19 trophies… At Chelsea you always have to compete for the trophies, but they are now light years away from that.”
