Erling Haaland is elected Player of the Year in the Premier League by the British press. The Manchester City striker has won the election by an overwhelming majority. Arsenal players Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard came second and third.
Haaland was voted Player of the Year by a landslide
Every season there are separate elections in England for the players’ union and the press. The result of the Football Writers’ Association is therefore already known: Haaland won with 82 percent of the vote! Manchester City announced through the official channels. It is the largest margin ever since the introduction of the Premier League.
It’s not a big surprise. The Norwegian came over from Borussia Dortmund last summer and thundered through the Premier League in his first season. He recently made history by scoring his 35th Premier League goal, breaking an almost thirty-year-old record held by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole.
In addition, Haaland also gave seven assists. He was directly involved in no fewer than 42 City goals this season. Partly because of this, Pep Guardiola’s team is in pole position for the championship. Incidentally, Haaland still has four matches to further sharpen his total.
Haaland is the successor to Mohamed Salah
With his honorary title, Haaland is the successor to Mohamed Salah. “To win this award in my first season is a great honor for me,” said the Norwegian. “I work every day to be the best version of myself. This recognition means a lot to me.”
“I’m enjoying my time at City so far. My teammates are incredible and give me opportunities to score. I am also indebted to Pep and the guiding staff. Everyone is so good to me, I’ve never worked with such top professionals,” says Haaland.
“I also want to thank everyone who voted for me. It is a great honor to win this award. But now I’m focused again on finishing the season as well as possible and helping City win trophies,” he concluded.
Sam Kerr won in the women’s. The Chelsea striker takes home the trophy for the second year in a row. Rachel Daly (Aston Villa) and Lauren James (Chelsea) finished second and third there.
