Erling Haaland broke the Prem record for most goals in a single season by scoring against West Ham United on Wednesday. The counter of the Manchester City machine now stands at 35 league goals. He only needed 31 games for that.
Haaland breaks Premier League goalscoring record
Haaland also scored against Fulham on Sunday and then drew level with Andy Cole and Alan Shearer. They scored 34 goals on behalf of Newcastle United (Cole) and Blackburn Rovers (Shearer) in the 1993/94 and 1994/95 seasons. The Premier League then consisted of 22 teams, meaning Cole and Shearer had 42 games to set their record.
Haaland has to make do with four games less, but that has not proven to be a problem for the Norwegian goal scoring machine. With his goal against West Ham, the City striker passed Shearer and Cole. He now sits alone on the throne.
City still have five games to go after Wednesday. The big question is how many goals Haaland will end up with.
Haaland speaks of painful honorary guard and subdued party after record
With a wide grimace, Haaland spoke to Sky Sports after his record match. The goal machine turned out to be quite human, but then again not. “That honor guard was still quite painful, everyone hit me on the back and the back of the head,” Haaland grinned. “But it gave me a great feeling, I’ve never seen anything like it. It reminded me of every goal I scored this season.”
After the human touch in the interview, Haaland continued on autopilot. “I don’t think about other records, I’m going to sleep, wake up tomorrow and think about the three points against Leeds United,” the Norwegian referred to the next game. He also indicated that he wanted to exchange all his goals for a chance at the treble with Man City. The club is at the top of the Premier League, reached the semi-finals of the Champions League and faces city rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup.
In the Haaland house, therefore, there was no partying until late into the night. “I’m going to play some computer games,” he looked ahead to a quiet evening after the game. “I can’t keep thinking about all the records, then I go crazy in my head. I’m going to eat something and then sleep, then I’ll have to think about Leeds. That is my life.”
