New head coach Ronald Koeman is making great changes to the future of the midfield at Barcelona.
The Dutch coach told Luis Suarez, Samuel Umtiti, Ivan Rakitic and Arturo Vidal that they are surplus to requirements on Monday, according to Marca.
Meanwhile, he had advised Jordi Alba that he is in his future plans.
He then talked to with Sergio Busquets on Tuesday morning. The meeting between Koeman and Busquets took place on the training ground in Barcelona and lasted about half an hour.
Koeman’s idea is to keep Busquets in the squad, but the position of the 32-year-old as an undisputed starter will change next season.
This is because Koeman’s aim is for Frenkie de Jong to play as the midfielder holding team. From now on, he will have to compete for a place in the team.
This is similar to what happened to Busquets with Ernesto Valverde. at the beginning of the 2019/20 season, Valverde planned to drop the midfielder in some games, before Quique Setien made him an undisputed starter again.
