Just days ago, rumors were circulating around Barcelona’s plans for football transfers and player sales in the January transfer window. Indeed, the prospective selling of Frenkie de Jong in the January markets already made for football news of raising funds. But now, the Catalan club’s sporting director Mateu Alemany has delivered a disheartening update on the club’s prospects this winter. Alemany has revealed that Spanish top-flight La Liga’s salary cap limit means Barca cannot sign players in January of 2022.
La Liga’s Salary Cap Limit Means Barca Cannot Sign Players in January
According to Goal.com, the Blaugrana will be unable to add any new players to their squad in January.
Despite their grand schemes under new management, Barcelona cannot purchase any players as that will violate the salary cap limit.
Signing Xavi Hernandez himself, as their new head coach replacing Ronald Koeman, maxed out the salary limits of Barcelona.
Barcelona will reach La Liga’s mandated wage limit once the club registers the newly appointed manager and his 7-men staff.
“Right now, we cannot sign anyone in January,” Barcelona’s sporting director Mateu Alemany told the press.
“After we register Xavi, we don’t have a room for more salaries due to Financial Fair Play rules. We’ll see what happens,” Alemany then said, though.
Reports prior to this eye-opener laid out Barcelona’s extensive plans in the upcoming transfer market. As a matter of fact, the Catalan club were showing avid interest in signing a Red Bull Salzburg young star.
While previously they were keen on Karim Adeyemi, now, given the circumstances, securing his services might take a bit longer.
