Leeds United have appointed an experienced expert in Daniel Farke to lead the hunt for promotion to the Premier League. The 46-year-old German is the successor to Sam Allardyce at Elland Road.
Farke will try to repeat promotion trick at Leeds
Farke is an old acquaintance of Leeds supporters. In the 2018/19 season he was still the manager of the great rival. Daniel Farke’s Norwich City then edged ahead of Sheffield United and Leeds United in a blistering title battle for England’s second tier. Where Sheffield United followed Norwich to the Premier League as number two, Leeds had to wait another year for promotion from then manager Marcelo Bielsa.
For Farke, this will be his second job in England after almost four and a half years at Norwich. The bosom friend of Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp was a trainer at Borussia Mönchengladbach in the past season.
Leeds will face competition in the battle for promotion from Leicester City and Southampton, the other clubs that were relegated from the Premier League in the past season. There are two Dutch players in the Leeds selection: Pascal Struijk and Crysencio Summerville.
Gerrard continues his coaching career in Saudi Arabia
Steven Gerrard continues his coaching career in Saudi Arabia. After his departure from Aston Villa, the manager was without a club, but he will now work for Al-Ettifaq. The club announced this on Monday evening.
The Liverpool icon was sacked from Aston Villa in October after a series of disappointing results. In the years before, he had great successes as head coach with Rangers FC, including becoming champion. After months of being clubless, Al-Ettifaq has now confirmed that Gerrard will be the new head coach. At his new club he will have to deal with former Ajax player Amin Younes, among others.
Previously, big names such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema have already traveled to Saudi Arabia, but Gerrard is the first star to work there as a trainer. In recent weeks, several trainers have been linked to a move to the Middle East. According to Corriere dello Sport, Jose Mourinho could have become the highest-paid coach ever by signing a contract worth €60 million a year.
