Changing of the guard in Ajax’s supervisory board: “I’ve been through a lot in seven years”
Meijaard already announced in November that he did not want to continue as chairman of the supervisory board, his departure was formally confirmed on Tuesday during the extraordinary general meeting of shareholders at Ajax. This ends a period of seven years. Meijaard had been a member of the Supervisory Board since April 2016 and became chairman of the supervisory body two years later.
“I’ve been through a lot at Ajax in the past seven years,” says Meijaard in a press release. “Besides highs, there were also some lows. But it was a mostly good time in which Ajax was very successful sportively, financially and commercially. Reaching the Europa League final and the UEFA Champions League semi-final are memories forever.”
Meijaard thanks the other members of the Supervisory Board, the management and other employees of Ajax and is proud that there is one woman on the management and two women on the supervisory board. He commented, “In all those years I have seen it as my task to help Ajax to further professionalise. That work is not yet done. After my departure, the supervisory board has now been almost completely renewed. I am convinced that my successors will continue this work.”
General manager Edwin van der Sar thanks Meijaard for his efforts. “We have always regarded Leen as a support, who also remained calm when circumstances were difficult. He operated in the background and he was always there when you needed him. He can look back on a period in which we continued to grow and in which several successes were achieved,” he said.
The Pier Eringa era
Eringa was formally appointed as Meijaard’s successor during the EGM. As chairman of the Supervisory Board for amateur football at the KNVB. The former president-director of ProRail has already gained experience in football. Ajax is still looking for a new football commissioner after the departure of Danny Blind, he has an important voice in finding a technical director.
