Liverpool captain Henderson is in awe of Cody Gakpo. The Liverpool captain calls the Dutch winter acquisition the only bright spot in spicy weeks for The Reds .
Liverpool were painfully outclassed by Brighton & Hove Albion (3-0) on Saturday afternoon. Afterwards, in conversation with Viaplay, Henderson put his finger on the sore spot. “A very disappointing and tough day for us. We were weak from the very first moment to the very end. Brighton were better in every aspect of the game. A real low point. We have to improve immediately if we want anything else this season,” said the 32-year-old midfielder, who has played no less than 470 games for Liverpool.
Henderson was full of praise for Gakpo. “He’s doing really well. Honestly, I feel sorry for him that he’s coming into a team that has so little self-confidence. That must be very difficult for him,” said the Englishman about his new teammate. The 23-year-old Orange international is still waiting for his first victory in the Liverpool shirt after two matches.
The FA Cup game with Wolverhampton Wanderers ended in a 2-2 draw, so a big blow against Brighton followed on Saturday. “Cody has adapted well and he’s done really well in the games he’s played,” says Henderson. “That’s really the only positive thing we can take from this game. Hopefully he can give us the energy we miss and so need. He was the only bright spot.”
Jürgen Klopp lashed out at his players
Jürgen Klopp has lashed out at his players after the defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion. Liverpool was swept off the mat at the Premier League debut of Orange striker Cody Gakpo. The German trainer spared no one afterwards.
“This is extremely frustrating,” Klopp began his account in front of the BBC’s cameras. Liverpool had nothing to say in Brighton. “Compliments to them. They were great, but they also had a really bad opponent. We didn’t do anything right today. I can’t recall any good phase in the game. We had tried to help the boys with another formation, but that didn’t work at all. It’s my responsibility. I know,” the German remarked.
There was not a word of positivity in Klopp’s harsh judgment, who has had to deal with one setback after another this season. “I tried to change everything, but we were completely on the wrong foot. It was way too easy for Brighton. Our entire organization was missing. This is really a low point. I can’t remember a worse match under my leadership,” he added.
