Liverpool’s latest signing Gakpo has opened his account in the Premier League. The Eindhoven resident scored his first goal for Liverpool against fellow townsman Everton. After winning the Merseyside Derby, the attacker was overjoyed.
Gakpo made the switch from PSV in January and had not yet contributed directly to a goal in his first six games for Liverpool. Jürgen Klopp continued to line up the attacker despite criticism and that was rewarded on Monday evening
With his goal against Everton, Gakpo follows in the footsteps of Virgil van Dijk, who once also scored his first Liverpool goal against the neighbour. Van Dijk did that immediately on his debut.
Gakpo’s words of joy
“It was amazing,” Gakpo told Match of the Day. After six games without a goal, he finally scored. It prompted a crowd-turn. “It was a good moment for the team and a very, very good moment for myself. So I’m very happy with it. You dream of scoring on your debut, but I had to wait and be patient. Now it has finally worked,” he added.
On a pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Gakpo was able to tap in from close range. Not his hardest hit, but hopefully the first of many. “The goal is to score a lot more. This was a good attack from us and the ball came to me perfectly. I just had to tap it in. Trent’s pass was great,” the forward remarked.
“It’s important that we got the first win of the year,” Gakpo concluded. For the attacker, who was taken over from PSV, it was only his first victory in the Premier League. “Everyone knows we had a hard time. But we have a lot of quality. We can turn the situation around and this is the first step,” Liverpool’s latest signing Gakpo continued.
The fact that he scored in the derby against Everton made his goal even more special. According to the Orange international, “That was amazing. The support from the fans has been fantastic and helped us through this game. Now it is important that the boys recover from their injuries and add quality to the team. We all know what they can do, so we will get stronger.”
