Lyon 5-4 Montpellier: Elye Wahi will remember the away match against Olympique Lyon for a long time. The twenty-year-old striker from Montpellier scored no less than four times in fifteen minutes of playing time. Still, Lyon won. Wahi had to share the lead role with Alexandre Lacazette.
Top talent Wahi and Lacazette score four times in thriller in Lyon
The French youth international has already made a name for himself in Ligue 1 this season as one of the greatest talents of his generation. He has already scored thirteen times in the league. In Lyon, the top talent exceeded all expectations.
Wahi cleared the deficit in the fortieth minute by taking advantage of an error by Johann Lepenant: 1-1. A minute later it was again twenty-year-old Lepenant who went wrong. Again Wahi punished that, this time with a shot towards the far corner that ended up in the goal via the post (1-2).
Second half
From the penalty spot, the Montpellier youngster made it 1-3 in the 53rd minute. Wahi scored again in the 55th minute: 1-4. He became the first ever Montpellier player to score four times in a Ligue 1 match. Olivier Giroud was the last player to score at least seventeen times in the competition in Montpellier’s shirt. The young revelation was linked earlier this year to Arsenal and AC Milan, among others.
Strangely enough, Wahi did not become the match winner. Lyon showed character and turned a 1-4 deficit into a victory, in which Lacazette played a major role. The 31-year-old striker had already taken care of the 1-0 and after Wahi’s goals made it 2-4, 4-4 and 5-4. He scored that last goal in the ninth minute of extra time from a penalty kick, in order to ensure a fitting end to the spectacle. Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren had made it 3-4.
Olympique Lyonnais has four wins and one loss in their last five games, while Montpellier has two wins and three losses. This was Olympique Lyonnais’ ninth win by one goal this season. The defeat was also Montpellier’s eighth defeat by one goal. With four rounds to go, Olympique Lyonnais is in seventh place in the ranking and Montpellier occupies twelfth place. Olympique Lyonnais will face Clermont in the next game, on Sunday, May 14 at the Stade Gabriel Montpied. On the same day, Montpellier will play Lorient at home at the Stade de la Mosson.
