The English media is brimming with praise for City’s semi final performance. The 4-0 victory over Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League appeals to the imagination.
“No team on earth can stop this Man City”
“It was a brutal performance,” writes the BBC. “The unbeaten run in European home games has been extended to 26 games and started back in September 2018.” The public broadcaster’s reporter saw manager Pep Guardiola go down on his knees twice after a stupid loss of possession in the second half, but thinks the Spaniard is more than happy. “Guardiola is perhaps football’s greatest perfectionist, but even he will struggle to find areas for improvement after Man City’s sheer mastery against Real Madrid.”
The BBC is quick to call the treble. They wrote, “With a view to the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup title, it can be another great season for Man City. If anyone had any doubts about the greatness of the squad Guardiola has put together, those doubts have been swept away by an otherworldly display. It would be more of a surprise if they didn’t win the treble than if they did.”
“Should we still be surprised about that?”
Sky Sports is not surprised by the big victory over the record champions of the Champions League. “The myth of Real Madrid was still intact after the first leg, but on Wednesday that whole idea was blown away. Should we still be surprised about that? This season Man City has won 6-3 against Manchester United at home, 4-1 against Arsenal and Liverpool, 3-0 against Bayern Munich. Real Madrid had no answer for it either. Luka Modric and Toni Kroos were getting older by the minute. This Man City is uncontrollable. ‘The best team in the country and the whole world,’ the fans chanted. Nowadays it feels more like a statement than a boast.”
They also count on the treble at Manchester Evening News, because Man City’s current form is impressive. “If Man City continues to play like this, there is no team on earth that can stop them. This was the club’s best night in Champions League history. They have destroyed the image of the best team in the Champions League,” was the words chosen.
