Liverpool prepared for their chance to reduce the gap on Premier League leaders Manchester City later on Saturday, while Leeds boss Jesse Marsch suffered a 1-0 defeat at Leicester in his debut game in charge of the Premier League strugglers. After replacing Marcelo Bielsa, Marsch has been hired to save Leeds from relegation. However, he was unable to immediately change Leeds’ fortunes, as Harvey Barnes scored the winner in the second half in his 100th Premier League game. Leeds have lost their previous five games and are just two points above the relegation zone, which was tough on Marsch’s team, who controlled for extended spells.
After Bob Bradley’s brief stint as manager of Swansea City in 2016, Marsch becomes only the second American to lead a Premier League club.
The 48-year-old has already been dubbed “Leeds’ Ted Lasso” by some, a reference to the bumbling American who manages a fake English team in a current television comedy show.
As he prepared for his first taste of the Premier League, Marsch recognised last week that the Lasso persona added to the stigma.
Marsch, who was fired by RB Leipzig in December following a dismal five-month stint, faces a monumental task in changing views while keeping Leeds afloat.
Leeds fans adored Bielsa after he orchestrated the club’s long-awaited return to the Premier League.
However, while Bielsa roused the sleeping giant, his stubbornness to adapt his attacking game strategy was revealed in Leeds’ second season back in the Premier League.
Marsch showed hints of being able to help shore up Leeds’ defence in this well-drilled display, but time is running out to keep them up.
Mateusz Klich and Rodrigo were introduced into the Leeds line-up, and Marsch nearly had a dream start when Daniel James forced a brilliant save from Kasper Schmeichel early on.
Schmeichel, a former Leeds goalkeeper, was called into action again moments later to save a shot from Jack Harrison.
