Among Serie A football news, Torino surprisingly thumped Fiorentina 4-0 with a Josip Brekalo brace as they emerged from quarantine. Brekalo, Wilfried Singo, and Antonio Sanabria snuck four goals past Fiorentina’s sloppy defending, as you can watch in the highlights here.
This fixture was postponed from Sunday, as Toro had just emerged from five days of quarantine following a COVID outbreak. There were some silver linings to this as youth team goalkeeper Luca Gemello got to make his debut.
It was the first game of 2022 for Fiorentina, as would-be rivals Udinese were also in quarantine on January 6.
Serie A Football News – Torino Surprisingly Thumped Fiorentina 4-0
The hosts took the lead after 19 minutes when Wilfried Singo peeled away from his marker at the back post. He thus nodded the ball in after a Mergim Vojvoda cross from the left.
Moments later, Torino doubled their advantage with a well-worked move down the right. We witnessed Sasa Lukic riding a tackle to roll across for the Josip Brekalo tap-in.
Then, Fiorentina finally woke up as Nico Gonzalez and Dusan Vlahovic started testing the debutant goalkeeper.
But Jose Callejon’s appalling back-pass left Pietro Terracciano somewhat stranded, allowing Brekalo to pounce and deposit into an empty net.
There were two changes at half-time, whereas Torino added a fourth goal when substitute Igor completely misjudged Rolando Mandragora’s pass. Igor did not realize that Antonio Sanabria, who went around Terracciano and scored, was right behind him.
When the Viola did get a shot on target with the Gonzalez header, Gemello was equal to it. Jonathan Ikone made his Fiorentina debut for the final stages, but Torino had cast their die and the hosts won 4-0.
