Shen Mengyu created history when she signed for Celtic. She became the first ever Chinese women’s footballer in the UK. Mengyu scored the opening goal in the Scottish Women’s Cup final.
When reflecting on the game Shen Mengyu described: “Fantastic, I can’t describe that feeling.”
“Before that game in training, a lot of the team-mates just said to me, ‘you must get a goal in the cup final game.’
“And I just said okay, I’ll believe that.”
The Chinese internationalist midfielder who can play both centrally and out wide and joined from Shanghai Shengli. This is what she had to say about her position: “I had to play in a different position, I’d never played wingback and was so nervous. But, I just thought, what can I do?
“It was just amazing to make history and I did that with my team-mates, like Liv Chance, together lifting that trophy felt so good.”
Becoming the first ever Chinese women’s footballer in the UK comes with its own set of difficulties. Here is what she had to say about adapting to life in Glasgow:
“I’m so lucky getting to play for such a nice team and have so many friends here. My team-mates gave me a lot of patience and confidence.
“The club and the fans all trust and believe in us and I have great team-mates.”
