With the help of a string of Alex McCarthy saves and Che Adams’ early goal, Southampton secured a 1-0 win over Manchester City.
Che Adams scored his first goal of the Premier League with a spectacular long-range shot to give Southampton a 1-0 advantage over Manchester City.
Meanwhile, the visitors missed fluency at St Mary’s from the very beginning. The second-placed team was made to pay for their poor start when Stuart Armstrong halfway snatched Oleksandr Zinchenko’s possession.
The ball then went for Adams, without a goal since April 2019, who swept a superb 40-yard effort across the stranded Ederson into a gaping net.
Since his £15million signing just over a year ago, Adams made his 25th top-flight appearance for Saints but he picked a fine time to decut his scoring. Adams’ wonderful finish followed a flurry of chances for the men of Pep Guardiola.
The hosts thus won an early lead, as Manchester City was surprisingly beaten.
Southhampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy was also inspired. He prevented Gabriel Jesus from hitting his target from near proximity.
McCarthy then parried from Raheem Sterling in a frenzied spell, dived after a shot by Fernandinho that bounced off the post as well as leapt back to his feet to brilliantly repel the header of David Silva.
Riyad Mahrez was next to find the insured keeper blocking his way until a scrambling Danny Ings volleyed over when, just before half-time, he could have doubled the lead of Saints.
After the interval, McCarthy was at it again, intercepting Jesus’ header and then smothering after a Zinchenko pass from Silva.
Thus, the hosts held on to give City their season’s ninth league loss, and their third in a row away from home.
City rested Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden, among others, after crushing Liverpool champions in the midweek.
However, De Bruyne and Foden soon arrived from the bench. But Mahrez and Sterling’s withdrawals just seemed to further damage City and Ederson had to avoid an Armstrong blast as his side stuttered to a shock loss despite exerting much late pressure.
