In nine days, Spanish internationals will kick off their World Cup campaign against Costa Rica. Sergio Ramos will see his country’s World Cup game on television for the very first time in twenty years. The renowned Paris Saint-Germain defender has provided an explanation on his Instagram account.
Ramos was still considered part Luis Enrique’s pre-selection, but the 37-year-old red card collector did not make the final cut. He has now made his voice heard. “Last season was challenging for me since I had to adjust to a new team and a new place.” I’ve made a physical and emotional commitment to heal and feel the way I’ve always felt, inspired by personal goals and dreams.”
Ramos is aware that those noble intentions have had an impact. “Fortunately, I’m starting to feel like myself again this season. I’m loving football again, and I’m playing for a fantastic club in a fantastic city. What about the World Cup? Of course, winning the World Cup for the fifth time was a dream of mine, but I’ll have to watch it from home. That’s difficult, but the sun will rise again tomorrow. I wouldn’t change anything about myself,” writes Ramos, who thanks his followers for their support.
The highlight of Ramos’ World Cup career came twelve years ago, when the red shirts won the tournament. The quest for a second World Cup title will begin next week with a match versus Costa Rica. Following that, meetings with Germany and Japan are scheduled.
Spanish internationals Sergio Ramos, Iñaki and Nico spoke emotionally
In other Spanish national team news, Iñaki and Nico spoke emotionally about what their families meant to them. “When we were little, we didn’t know enough about what happened,” recounts Iñaki, the older brother. “They told us, and now you value everything in life even more.” The two brothers’ parents crossed the Sahara in the search for a good life and found it in Spain.
Iñaki and Nico traveled to their parents’ country at an early age, which left an influence on them. “As we walked about, we observed boys our age and younger working in the fields. I tapped my brother on the shoulder and said that might be us if our parents hadn’t crossed. On the one hand, we were grateful for everything we had because of our parents, who risked their lives for us. On the other hand, it made me sad that people still live the way they do today.”
