Technical director Paolo Maldini and club icon of AC Milan, hopes that he will receive the financial means to strengthen the Rossoneri next summer. After the loss at Internazionale, Maldini also discussed the future of Rafael Leão.
Maldini gives a clear signal to Milan owners after CL elimination
Internazionale won the home game against Milan with a goal from Martínez. The game in the UEFA Champions League Semi-finals ended in 1-0. No goals were scored before the break and it took until the 74th minute for Lautaro Martínez to give Internazionale the lead, with an assist from Romelu Lukaku.
Maldini saw Milan’s Champions League adventure end on the threshold of the final in Istanbul against Inter on Tuesday. The former top defender notes that the fellow townsman was simply too strong. “Unfortunately we couldn’t make it a real game. We again had a lot of trouble with Inter’s way of playing,” the five-time European Cup/Champions League winner stated in conversation with Sky Italia.
Maldini realizes that it will be a difficult story to win a Champions League ticket for next season. “Our season is not over yet, but we owe it to our position to finish in the top four in Serie A. We also have to wait and see what will happen with Juventus’ final ranking,” he added.
Milan policy
Milan’s technical director hopes that the semi-final place will not remain an accident. And counts on the American owners of the Italian top club. “At Milan you can only be satisfied if you keep winning. We need to invest more to stay in the top four in Italy. And to continue on this footing in Europe. We have traveled a very long economic and sporting journey to get back here. Our team is on average three years younger than Inter, which was also visible,” he continued.
“We want to build a young team and therefore take certain risks. It might have been easier to get someone like Paulo Dybala instead of Charles De Ketelaere last summer, but that wouldn’t have fitted in with the trajectory we’ve set out with the owners,” said Maldini, who expects white smoke soon around the contract extension by star player Rafael Leão. “It’s still about details, it’ll be fine.”
