Hollywood club Wrexham writes new chapter in special British title fight
Wrexham, the club of Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, has found itself in an exceptionally tense title battle in the National League, England’s fifth tier. The Hollywood club was on 100 points after 41 rounds. This placed it one place below competitor Notts County, which had the same number of points, but played a game more.
The two teams faced each other on Monday afternoon. With five games left for Wrexham and four for Notts County, the title battle was reaching boiling point. Not only the championship is at stake, but also the promotion ticket. Only the number one in the National League is promoted directly to League Two, the number two is sentenced to the play-offs.
Wrexham and Notts County are two clubs with a huge history. Wrexham was founded in 1864, making it one of the top ten oldest football clubs in the world. Notts County was founded even two years earlier and won the FA Cup in 1893-94. Wrexham played seven times in the European Cup II, but both teams have now slipped considerably.
Due to the game being played less, the pressure was just a little more on Notts County, but just before the break that team did take the lead. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, John Bostock passed former England international Ben Foster. The goalkeeper saw his team hit back just after the break. Paul Mullin put his team at 1-1 with his 35th league goal. Only one player has scored more this season: Notts County striker Macauly Langstaff.
Second half
Twenty minutes before the end, Jacob Mendy completely turned the backlog of the home team (2-1), but five minutes later Kyle Camaron put Notts County level again. More than ten minutes before the final whistle, Elliot Lee Wrexham shot completely into ecstasy by making it 3-2. Deep into stoppage time, Notts County striker Cedwyn Scott had the perfect chance to put his side back on level terms with a penalty kick, but Foster turned the hero by turning the penalty.
As a result, the club from Wales takes over the lead from the major competitor. Against the 5th, 7th, 21st and 22nd place clubs, the Hollywood club has to hold on to the three-point lead.
