LIV Golf: Atul Khosla, the chief operating officer of LIV Golf, has left the company following the first season of the Saudi-funded breakaway venture.
Khosla left his position as chief corporate development and brand officer with the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers just over a year after being appointed to that position.
In a statement to the New York Times, Greg Norman, the commissioner of LIV, said: “Atul Khosla chose to move on at the completion of LIV’s outstanding debut season.
“We respect AK and his personal decision.”
The arrival of LIV has caused conflict in the sport over the past year due to criticism of Saudi Arabia’s investment given the nation’s human rights abuses.
In the meanwhile, the tour has attracted a number of well-known players from other circuits, notably The Open champion Cameron Smith, with attractive prize money and a condensed season.
Players that switched have received notable indefinite suspensions from the PGA, and the status of LIV participation in the Ryder Cup is also unknown.
Rory McIlroy has been one of the most vocal opponents of LIV and most recently demanded that Norman be fired as commissioner so that they can come to an agreement with the PGA.
In February, LIV will launch a 14-tournament season with $405 million in prize money after recently adding three championship locations in the United States to its itinerary.
Events for the LIV Golf League will take place in 2023 at The Gallery Golf Club in Tucson, Arizona (March 17–19), Cedar Ridge Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma (May 12–14), and The Greenbrier in the Allgheny Mountains (August 4-5), West Virginia.
According to Norman, the excitement for the league’s introduction in 2023 is building as a result of LIV Golf’s development into new US areas.
“More fans across the nation and around the world will experience the LIV Golf enthusiasm and cutting-edge competition that has rejuvenated the sport, and these championship courses will contribute to the transformative season ahead for players, fans, and the game of golf,” according to the statement.
Smith, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, and Sergio Garcia, who are all a part of the LIV circuit, are anticipated to appear at the events.
