LIV Golf: Whether for better or worse, LIV Golf left its imprint on the golf industry in 2018.
At a pre-tournament news conference for the Houston Open on Wednesday, Sahith Theegala remarked, “I think no matter how everyone feels about either circuit, whatever beliefs they have or thoughts they have, Whether people want to accept it or not, I believe it has an impact on everyone.”
However, did LIV improve the PGA Tour? Theegala concurs.
He said that the Tour is wonderful for the players because it is getting better and more competitive. “There are more opportunities than ever.”
Many people can only imagine Theegala’s first season as a professional athlete. Despite a few setbacks keeping him from recording his first Tour victory, he nevertheless cemented his status as a rising star and qualified for the Tour Championship.
The 24-year-old might easily defect to the Saudi-sponsored circuit given his recent success, but Theegala would rather pursue his aspirations than money. Having said that, Theegala feels no ill will toward LIV or any of the players who left.
I’ve previously stated that the PGA Tour is my main aim, and it’s clear that I grew up dreaming of playing on the tour. “I don’t mind anything else happening, though. It’s great for the players, but I feel like it’s been made a bit more of a deal than most. In fact, many of the players I’ve spoken to haven’t even heard of it.”
However, the 53rd-ranked golfer in the world is disappointed that a few of the best players in the world have left the PGA Tour.
The regrettable fact is that the world’s best players no longer play together, according to Theegala. “There’s no denying that Cam [Smith] and (Dustin Johnson) are some of the finest players in the world, so it’s bad that the talent pool has become fragmented. However, aside from when I’m questioned about it, I really don’t give it much attention,” the player said.
The Houston Open this week has been affected by LIV. Along with previous champions Ian Poulter, Phil Mickelson, Matt Jones, and Paul Casey, Jason Kokrak and Carlos Ortiz left for LIV earlier this year.
Theegala is certain that the players who were given a chance on Tour as a result of LIV defections will rise to the occasion behind his confidence that the Tour is in good hands despite the rupture LIV made in golf.
When questioned about whether LIV players would be missed in Houston, he responded, “Sure, maybe that’s the case. But there are simply too many talented golfers, especially in this day and age, so the next man up will take that position and, as a result, a man who may not have had the opportunity to be that superstar will step up into it. Just too many golfers, and not just bad golfers either.
