The Masters: Much of the discussion leading up to this year’s Masters centred on two of the “big three” players in modern golf. By the time the last putt was made on the 18th hole at Augusta National, only the player who had been largely overlooked was being mentioned.
Rory McIlroy’s attempt to don the elusive Green Jacket came to an end as he missed the cut while defending champion Scottie Scheffler failed to become just the fourth golfer to claim back-to-back victories in the competition.
Conversely, after winning the 2018 US Open, Jon Rahm stood tall over the rest of the field, winning his first Masters tournament by four strokes and moving halfway towards completing the golf’s four majors Grand Slam.
The only players to accomplish that accomplishment before are Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, and Gene Sarazen. McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, and Jordan Spieth (each with three majors) are presently vying for the record. Rahm, however, downplayed the likelihood that it would occur for him any time soon.
Rahm, who will certainly be one of the favourites for the PGA Championship at Oak Hill East Course next month, remarked, “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. I mean, that would be incredible. It would be wonderful.
“The ability to complete it, close it out, and complete a Grand Slam would be really fantastic because not many people have been able to achieve it.
“I would like to claim that I entered the race when I won the US Open, but you obviously don’t want to think about it since you’re so far away, do you? But as players, you’re thinking about it.
“It’s something else that would be incredible, but getting there is going to be difficult. It says a lot that two athletes like Phil and [Arnold Palmer] were unable to accomplish something similar.”
It was no surprise to Mickelson that Rahm has further solidified his position as one of the top golfers in the world today after his triumph at Augusta, making him the first European player to win the US Open and Masters.
Mickelson, who tied for second place with Brooks Koepka at Augusta after finishing behind Rahm, said: “First time I played with him we played Whisper Rock, and he shot 62 and I thought I played pretty decent, and he gave me a pretty good beat-down.”
