RBC Heritage: Jon Rahm, the newly crowned Masters champion, is aiming for a “jacket double” after restraining himself from pulling out of the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head.
Rahm returned to the top of the world after winning the current PGA Tour-designated event at Augusta National on Sunday by a four-shot margin. However, he postponed his celebrations for a week in order to travel from Georgia to South Carolina.
“I was drained on Monday. At the Harbour Town pre-tournament press conference,” Rahm said, “I don’t know how else to express it honestly. I did my best to be a dad, but I wasn’t really useful in any way. We had a family day, stayed in Augusta for one more day, and then travelled here yesterday.
“I wasn’t going to be rejoicing as some people might have thought I would. That will happen next week. That was a very tough week with a lot of battling, weather-related events, and obviously a lot of mental strain. So getting to a decent location will take some time, but I’m in excellent spirits.”
Following the Masters, a number of players—including Jason Day and Rory McIlroy, who both missed the cut—withdrew from the RBC Heritage. Rahm, who is vying for his fifth victory of the year, chose against doing the same.
Although I did consider it, he said, “I made a pledge earlier in the year and I want to honour that commitment,” After speaking with Kelley, I tried to imagine what it must be like for the kids as well as the onlookers. If I were one of the young people, I would want to watch the most recent Masters champion play, regardless of how well or poorly he played.
“I still plan to possibly make two of the jackets and bring this one home. Yet, because I was so exhausted, I did consider withdrawing, and clearly, I believe it would have occurred to anyone.
“But, it was for this reason that I made the decision to arrive yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon, take it easy, and simply give my body a rest before I switched into competition mode. You can count on me to play to win every time I tee off in a competition. I’m going to give it my all to win.
