Golf Live: After the Masters, Brooks Koepka criticised Patrick Cantlay for his lethargic performance, but Cantlay has refuted this accusation.
Prior to Koepka and the victor Jon Rahm, Cantlay was placed in the last group with Viktor Hovland.
On Sunday, Koepka struck back at those who had criticised him for playing slowly after tying for second place with Rahm at Augusta National, where it took the top two players almost five hours to finish their round.
Rahm and Koepka had to wait for practically every hole, and Cantlay was blamed for the sluggish conclusion to the year’s first major.
Cantlay, however, has refuted assertions that he was the only cause of the final round’s sluggishness, claiming that it was “slow for everyone.”
The group ahead of us was on the second tee when we stepped up to the second tee, and we waited all day on pretty much every shot, he added, speaking before this week’s RBC Heritage. We waited in the 15th and 18th fairways. I imagine that everyone found it to be slow.
It will take longer and longer to hole out when you play a golf course like Augusta National, where all of the hole placements are on significant slopes.
“I believe it may have contributed to some of the sluggish play on Sunday. Moreover, players often take their time when the wind is gusting and blowing irregularly. That’s just the way professional golf is, where every shot is so important, in my opinion.”
‘Cantlay is simply for laughs’
During the final round, Koepka referred to the tempo as being “brutally sluggish,” adding that “Jon [Rahm] went to the loo like seven times during the round, and we were still waiting.”
Jamie Spence remarked, “Cantlay is simply a joke; I can’t watch him.” He has that demeanour, and from the way he plays, I simply don’t think he can shift out of that gear.
“The officials should speak with him, not me. Really, he ought to take a good look at himself since no one wants to see that. Some of them either believe they are not sluggish or are completely ignorant, but if the officials in charge of the regulations allow them to get away with it, they will continue.”
