PGA Tour: After the third day of the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas, Patrick Cantlay and Tom Kim are tied for the lead. Cantlay shot an outstanding round of 60, his first on the tour as a professional.
In his first six holes, Cantlay made five birdies, and he continued the trend to the end to finish 11 under par.
The 30-year-old Californian narrowly missed the first-ever round under 60 on the 18th hole when he shot a 25-yard birdie attempt just too high of the hole.
“I drive the ball in the fairway a lot here, and I’m not afraid to hit the driver on practically every hole,” said Cantlay, who has finished second in Las Vegas twice. “I, therefore, have a large wedge for greens. I can shoot low scores if I make lots of putts.”
Patrick Cantlay would move up to second in the world standings if he won on Sunday’s final round.
Joint leader Kim, who was bogey-free, also made birdies on five of his final six holes. He finished with a score of 62 by driving a wedge to two feet on the last hole. The two players, who are both 19 under overall, are three shots ahead of Mito Pereira and Matthew NeSmith, who are their closest rivals. Pereira is the overnight leader going into the third round.
Kim replied, “We haven’t taken off with it. “I must perform well tomorrow. There are probably many guys who are thinking that.”
With his hole-in-one at the 14th, Adam Hadwin, who is tied for seventh after shooting a six-under-par 65, produced the day’s best shot.
