AT&T Byron Nelson: Tyrrell Hatton of England recorded a six-under 65 to finish the third round at the AT&T Byron Nelson in Texas only three strokes out of the lead.
Hatton moved to 13 under after a flawless day by making birdies on four of his final five holes, including his final three. His sizzling putting saved him following wayward play off the tee and with his approaches.
“It’s crazy that there were no bogeys throughout the round,” he told CBS. “I was struggling a little bit with my swing and just didn’t feel at ease. Making par putts kept me somewhat involved.”
Scottie Scheffler, who struggled to an even-par round on Saturday, is one stroke ahead of Hatton at the halfway point. Austin Eckroat, Ryan Palmer, and Zecheng Dou are currently tied for the lead at 16 under.
Global No. 2 Scheffler had bogeys at holes three and four before making up for it with gains at holes five and six and moving to one under for the day with a further birdie at hole nine.
He attempted to escape a bunker twice at the par-five 18th but was unsuccessful in doing so. He finished his round with a bogey six.
Following two days of consecutive seven-under 64s, Scheffler remarked of his third round, “I struggled with sort of everything. I wasn’t having a strong swing, and I wasn’t sinking many putts. That is how you get parity.
Scheffler is one of the players in the line-up that includes Jason Day, Si Woo Kim, and Vincent Normann and is two shots back.
To qualify for next week’s PGA Championship at Oak Hill, American rookie Eckroat shot an eight-under 63, which was only equalled by Carson Young on the day. Eckroat is attempting to win his first PGA Tour tournament.
Seven birdies and a double-bogey were part of Eckroat’s exciting front nine, and he added three more gains on the back nine.
