AT&T Byron Nelson: In the AT&T Byron Nelson in Dallas, Seung-Yul Noh overcame a broken driver to shoot an incredible opening 60 and grab a three-stroke lead.
The South Korean, who is ranked 536 in the world and has only ever won once on the PGA Tour in 2014, cracked the head of his driver on the 12th tee, but he recovered to card the first 60 on the PGA Tour since Patrick Cantlay’s at the Shriners Children’s Open in October. During his round, he also made an eagle and nine birdies.
As a result, Noh is three strokes ahead of Adam Scott of Australia and Zecheng Dou of China, who are tied for second place at eight under par. Scottie Scheffler, the world’s No. 2, and Jason Day are among those who are further behind.
Harry Hall of England shot a first-round 67, one better than Tyrell Hatton, who is three under after the first round, thanks to four birdies in five holes to the turn.
Noh needed an eagle on the par-five 18th to break the course record and shoot 59. However, he chose to lay up short of the water rather than try to reach the green in two strokes. He then used a wedge for his third approach, which spun to within nine feet of the hole as he eventually opted for birdie.
“Except for two shots off the tee that went through the green, everything went flawlessly today,” according to Noh. “Then, I’m really happy for my career-low on the PGA Tour.”
Before the Zurich Classic of New Orleans became a team event, the 31-year-old Noh’s lone and sole victory on the PGA Tour occurred there in 2014. He took two years off from his profession to finish his two years of military duty in South Korea, and even though he returned in 2019, his performance has been inconsistent since then. He spent much of last year outside the top 1,000 in the global rankings.
Noh would secure the final berth in the field for the PGA Championship, the second major of the year, if he were to win the Byron Nelson.
