Australian Open Golf: Adam Scott, a former world number one, shot the day’s best round of 63 to take a share of the lead into the halfway stage of the ISPS Handa Australian Open on home turf.
The 42-year-old moved to eight under alongside overnight leader David Micheluzzi after shooting an eagle and five birdies on a bogey-free day at Victoria GC, one of two courses used in the competition.
Scott made back-to-back gains after making two birdies in his first four holes. The Australian added a close-range birdie at the par-three 14th before holing out from a huge distance to eagle the par-five final.
In terms of everything, Scott remarked, “I kind of reduced my expectations, both for today and for what I can do to the golf course. “I felt compelled to come here and really not push anything or take any chances. Even when I relaxed, I was still able to position it well, avoid difficulties, and make no mistakes.”
Before closing a second-round 71 at Kingston Heath GC, dropping him back to eight under, Michleuzzi was on track to hold onto his overnight lead. The pair held a three-shot lead over their closest competitors.
With Nicolai Hojgaard, a Ryder Cup contender, in the group four back after a one-under 71, Josh Geary, Haydn Barron, and Gunner Wiebe share third place on five under.
Tom Lewis of England is five shots down, and pre-tournament favourite Cameron Smith is two over and on the projected cut line. Smith is going for his second straight triumph.
After shooting a six-under 66 at Victoria Golf Club, major winner Hannah Green is in the lead after the women’s round of the first dual-gender competition. South Korea’s former world No. 1 Shin Jiyai is two shots down.
Following an eagle on the par-four 15th, Australian Green finished strong, scoring birdies on the 16th and 18th to pull two ahead of Shin, who shot a second-round score of 68.
Ashleigh Buhai, the winner of the AIG Women’s Open, shot a 69 at Kingston Heath to finish four strokes behind Green in a group at seven under, and world No. 4 Minjee Lee is six shots back going into the weekend.
