LIV Golf International Series: Former Masters winner Adam Scott claims that players who chose to play in the LIV Golf series were aware that by doing so, they might miss future majors or important competitions.
Cameron Smith, an Australian teammate of Scott’s, is one of the most well-known players to have joined the league supported by Saudi Arabia.
Smith will compete at The Masters in April and is scheduled to defend his Open Championship crown at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in July, but it is yet unknown whether he will participate in other prestigious competitions, such as the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Currently, LIV events do not offer official World Golf Ranking points, but the tour’s organisers hope that will change.
“Pity if Smith misses the 2024 Olympics”
Speaking before the Sony Open in Hawaii, Scott said: “They have made their choices, and some of those choices may require some short- or long-term sacrifice.
“In the short term, it meant giving up the chance to earn [points] for a world ranking. If they weren’t aware of that, they are now becoming aware of it.
“Smith missing the Olympics would, in my opinion, be bad for Australia and their squad.
“Along with (Marc Leishman), Matt Jones, and any other Australians who have participated, Cam also made these decisions. There might be some giving up.
“Most of the time, it appears that they are content to tolerate it. The Australians certainly seem that way.”
Scott: I disagree that the world rankings are accurate.
In spite of winning the Sentry Tournament of Champions over the weekend and maintaining his fifth-place rating in the world, Jon Rahm questioned the golf rankings.
Scott continued: “It’s quite difficult to get the world rankings just right. It isn’t correct, in my opinion. I don’t believe the weight at the top of the points is sufficient.
“I shouldn’t receive many points because I only defeated four opponents last week (at the Tournament of Champions).
“But Jon Rahm defeated a group of PGA Tour champions, as well as reportedly the top 30 players for the year, so I think that’s worthy of some points. I don’t believe the prizes you might receive for winning last week are sufficient.
“I don’t like it when things are put in place and then they’re promptly disproved, even though it’s subjective and there isn’t a wonderful solution. We don’t like it very much.”
