Aussie Open: On Friday night in Melbourne’s Moonee Valley Racing Club, Cameron Smith was having a few drinks with several of his friends when he had to, well, get back on the horse.
Smith, who had won the Australian PGA a week earlier, chose to go out that night because he assumed he would not make the Australian Open cut. But Smith swiftly reversed course when his 36-hole 2-over total unexpectedly proved to be good enough to continue into Saturday.
He had to be on the tee in a little while.
Smith admitted, “I wasn’t really anticipating it. When I realised we had an early tee time, I went back on the waters and was a good boy for the rest of the night since I got to the pub fairly quickly and probably had a few too many beers.”
Though the world No. 3 fired 1-under 69 at Victoria Golf Club in Round 3, Smith was unable to mount much of a comeback. He missed the secondary cut for the top 30 and ties by two strokes at 1 over. After 54 holes, Smith was joined by notables Cameron Davis, Rasmus Hojgaard, and amateur Wenyi Ding in retiring.
At 11 under, Adam Scott maintained his lead over the field, one shot better than Adrian Meronk and two shots better than Min Woo Lee and Haydn Barron. Now Scott, Meronk, and Lee are getting ready for a late Sunday morning tee time for the last group.
Smith had the option of going back to the bar if he so desired.
Smith stated, “I felt like I had it in me today and played a lot of excellent golf shots, but I just couldn’t really capitalise. It’s simply not my week.”
