The Official World Rankings, according to Bryson DeChambeau, is in danger of becoming “obsolete” if LIV Golf events are not taken into account.
Despite winning the LIV Golf Adelaide tournament on Sunday, Talor Gooch slipped two spots, from No. 57 to No. 59, in the most recent standings, while other players have seen major drops in the OWGR rankings since switching to the Saudi-sponsored circuit.
DeChambeau, who has slipped from inside the top 10 to 178th over the past 16 months, questions if OWGR is still a reliable method of determining the best players in the world. LIV Golf events continue to not provide world rankings points.
Before the LIV Golf Singapore, DeChambeau informed the media, “You should understand that the OWGR is not accurate. I believe they must reach a decision or it will be outmoded.”
“As of now, it’s pretty much almost obsolete. But once more, they are biting it pretty hard if the majors and everyone else continue to use that as their ranking system.
“I hope people can see past it, but I find it very unfortunate that that’s the way things are. It’s disheartening that someone would adopt such a rigid position.”
More LIV players in majors?
In addition to highlighting the need for reform, Phil Mickelson, who finished second at The Masters behind winner Jon Rahm with Brooks Koepka, also thinks the majors might open up more opportunities for LIV golfers.
As Mickelson observed on Wednesday, “It will all work itself out because if you’re one of the majors, if you’re The Masters, you’re not looking at ‘we should keep these guys out.”
“You’re telling yourself, We want the best field, we want the top players, and these guys really improved The Masters this year. How can we incorporate them?
“We need to develop a qualifying system that is open to all players, and if the World Golf Ranking isn’t going to be, then they need to find another method.
“Maybe they take the top five, top 10, or winners of LIV, but they’re going to have to find a way to get the best LIV players in their field if they want to have the best field in golf and be really what a major championship is about.”
18 LIV players competed at Augusta National earlier this month, and members of the circuit will compete in all four majors this year. However, as long as there are no world ranking points awarded, the number of players who are still eligible may decrease.
