Lilia Vu won the Chevron Championship, her first major championship and the first of the year, by defeating Angel Yin in a playoff.
After the two matched at 10 under for the competition and retook the par-five 18th hole at Carlton Woods in Texas, Yin’s second shot landed in the water in front of the green.
Vu had two shots to get over the green, but she left herself a mid-range putt for a birdie to win the tournament, which she duly sank to set off the 25-year-old’s dramatic celebrations.
In contrast to Mission Hills Country Club in California, where champion golfers have long celebrated by diving into Poppie’s Pond, the major was played elsewhere for the first time this year.
Vu continued the custom by jumping into the lake close to the 18th Green notwithstanding the change.
She set the clubhouse lead with a four-under 68 in her final round, which tied for the day’s lowest total. Georgia Hall of England and Jin Young Ko, the third-ranked golfer in the world, both fired final-round scores of 68, although their respective scores were five under and seven under.
With three holes remaining, Yin, who shared the overnight lead with Allisen Corpuz, was 11 under par for the tournament. However, after finding bunkers on holes 16 and 17, Yin made back-to-back bogeys.
After a strong comeback, Yin finished the 18th hole with a birdie to complete an even-par round of 72 and force a playoff after tying Vu at 10 under.
When recreating the hole minutes later as part of the playoff, Yin was unable to repeat the feat, sending her second ball into the water, which allowed Vu to seal a spectacular triumph with her birdie putt.
After the victory, Vu said, “I can’t even put into words what I was experiencing. “I felt anxious, afraid, and cold.
“All I wanted to do was make the putt and be finished.
“Everything takes place for a reason, right? Although I’m not sure how I did it, I’m just incredibly thrilled.”
For additional inspiration, Vu recalled the early Covid epidemic death of her late grandfather, who fled his native Vietnam with his wife and children before passing away.

“I had a lot of rages the last two days. I didn’t feel like me,” Vu continued.
