Zurich Classic: In order to post a seven-under 65 and win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Nick Hardy and Davis Riley birdied four of their final six holes. This was their first PGA Tour triumph.
Hardy and Riley started the day three strokes behind the leaders, but after a round of birdies and flawless play in the final round, they set a tournament record with a score of 30-under-par for the week.
The Canadians Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor, who ended two strokes off the lead despite an outstanding nine-under final round of 63, were the pair’s closest rivals. Between the seventh and thirteenth holes, they made seven straight birdies at one point to temporarily take the lead.
The Zurich Classic, the only team-based event on the PGA Tour schedule, alternates between foursomes (alternate shot) and four-ball (best-ball) formats for its first and third rounds.
Even though the alternate shot is thought to be the more challenging of the two formats, Riley and Hardy had a great back nine.
Riley’s six-foot birdie putt at the par-four 16th hole brought them to 29 under. After Hardy’s errant tee shot on the par-3 17th, Riley made their final birdie of the day by sinking an unbelievable 33-footer from the edge of the green.
The 2022 Valspar Championship playoff loss to Sam Burns was Riley’s prior best result. The Sanderson Farms Championship last autumn, where Hardy tied for sixth, was his best performance.
For winning the PGA Tour’s sole team event, each player receives $1.24 million in payouts and a two-year exemption.
Wyndham Clark and Beau Hossler, who were in first place after each of the first three rounds and had a one-stroke lead going into the final round, recorded their first three tournament bogeys, two of which came on the last three holes, and finished with a one-under 71 to place third, three shots down.
Former course record holders Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, who finished tied for fourth with Matthew NeSmith and Taylor Moore at 26 under, recorded eight birdies before their second bogey of the day on 18.
Keith Mitchell and Sungjae Im from South Korea, who started the day one stroke off the lead, scored a 72 and came in sixth place at 25 under.
