Bryson DeChambeau has elected to withdraw from this week’s PGA Championship, according to tournament organisers, while he recovers from surgery to mend a bone in his left wrist.
DeChambeau, who has only played six times this year owing to the wrist and hip issues, had surgery on his left-hand days after missing the cut at The Masters last month but hoped to return this week.
The big-hitting American, whose remarkable length off the tee has many wondering if he’s overworking his body, played a practice round at Southern Hills on Tuesday with a wrap on his left wrist.
DeChambeau tweeted after the practise round that he “Held up beautifully today.” Let’s see what happens tomorrow.”
DeChambeau hasn’t played on the PGA Tour since missing the cut at The Masters after going 12-over in the opening two rounds.
The world number 22 was supposed to play the opening two rounds of the year’s second major with Tyrrell Hatton and Max Homa from England. Denny McCarthy will now take his spot on the field.
“Everybody is going to say I’m coming back too quickly,” DeChambeau conceded to Sky Sports earlier this week.
“For me, this is more of like a prep to see if I can do it. If not, I’m going to take as much time as I need to get healthy, because that’s the most important thing.”
DeChambeau added that he thought he “absolutely” could win the whole tournament, albeit with the caveat “if the hand doesn’t get any worse”.
